The installation works of the port project are progressing and, in harmony with the preservation of the environment, Imetame Logística Porto has been carrying out activities that seek to conserve natural resources. To this end, the use of environmental KPI’s is one of the tools used to support environmental management and analysis of the results achieved by preventive and process improvement actions.
The KPI’s gather important information about the environmental characteristics of the region directly and indirectly influenced by the installation of the port, and generate subsidies for temporal and frequent analyses, to support environmental management. This way, with the advancement of monitoring, the time series of data obtained not only guarantee compliance with legislation, but also enable preventive actions, if any result shows variations different from what was expected.
The KPI’s used by IMETAME were defined in line with those recommended in the Environmental Development Index – IDA – administered by the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAq).
Although this index is aimed at ports in operation, its choice supports the company in the search for constant improvement of the culture of sustainability, becoming an instrument of management and environmental control during the project’s installation works.
An important example of how information that supports indicators is generated are marine monitoring programs. These programs aim to evaluate how the Port’s installation activities and dredging operations influence the quality of the environment, evaluating aspects related to seawater, sediments, associated fauna and flora, through the characterization of various physicochemical parameters, biological and ecotoxicological.
And at EAGLE team, Imetame Group’s dredging company, there is an onboard team specialized in monitoring activities and recording the occurrence of fauna (chelonians and cetaceans, such as sea turtles and dolphins). The presence of these animals, as well as the absence of negative interactions with the species, both in the dredging area and in the movements of tugboats and barges to dispose of sediment in the marine dump, represents one of the most important KPI’s of environmental quality in the region.
Since the beginning of the activity, in September 2022, 7,450 nautical miles (13,800 km) have been navigated in harmony with marine fauna, without interactions that could cause unwanted effects to the animals.
In addition to this wide range of environmental data, rates of generation and correct disposal of waste and effluents are also monitored, and interactions with neighboring communities are also monitored.
This is how we move forward, day by day, investing in the search for sustainable development in the region in which we operate.
